How to Get to Bled Castle from Ljubljana

Car, bus and train from the capital to the lake — then the walk or drive up the cliff to the castle gate.

Updated June 2026 · Bled Castle Tickets Concierge Team

Bled sits about 55 kilometres north-west of Ljubljana, an easy day trip or a stop on the way to the Alps. The journey has two parts: get to the lake, then get up to the castle on its cliff. Here are the options for both.

From Ljubljana to Lake Bled

By car it's roughly 35 minutes on the A2 motorway — the simplest option if you want to reach the upper castle car park directly. By bus, frequent services run from Ljubljana's main bus station to Bled in about 1 hour 15 minutes. By train, you can reach Bled (Lesce-Bled or Bled Jezero stations) in around 40–55 minutes depending on the service, though stations sit a little out from the lakefront.

If you're combining Bled with Lake Bohinj or the Vintgar Gorge, a car gives you the most freedom; otherwise the bus drops you closest to the lakeside and the foot of the castle path.

From the lake up to the castle

On foot it's a 15–20 minute walk uphill from the lakeside on signposted trails — scenic but steep in places, with steps near the top. Wear comfortable shoes. By car or taxi you can drive almost to the gate and use the upper car park, a few minutes' level-ish walk below the entrance — the best choice if the climb is a concern.

There's no need to rush the timing: your castle ticket is open-date, so you can fit the climb around lunch, the weather, or a boat trip to the island.

Making a day of it

A classic Bled day pairs the castle with the island: a traditional pletna boat across to the church of the Assumption, then the climb to the castle terrace to see the whole scene from above. Doing the boat first and the castle in the late afternoon keeps you ahead of the coach crowds and rewards you with golden light on the Alps.

How long does it take to get to Bled from Ljubljana?

About 35 minutes by car, around 1 hour 15 minutes by bus, and roughly 40–55 minutes by train depending on the service.

Can I drive up to the castle?

Yes. There's an upper car park a few minutes below the gate, which avoids the steep climb from the lakeside.
